Clean-ish

Clean-ish
An ode to my old mini-van, R.I.P.

The van was a mess
I must confess
It was time to give it a good cleaning

It had accumulated enough soot
For plants to take root
Giving dirty a whole new level of meaning

( And that was just the outside )

I rolled open the door
And gaped at the floor
It was completely covered in shit

As I held my nose
And shoveled out moldy clothes
I found myself ready to snap

From the windows I scraped stickers
From the seats I plucked  “pickers”
Left over from last winters’ colds

I tossed out dirty spoons and utensils
And worn broken crayons and pencils
And Tupperware containers full of old food

The van now exorcised
I spun around in surprise
And found my daughters staring back at me in shock

There stood my girls
Trash bags unfurled
Filling the van back up with their crap

New Cheer

New Cheer
Let’s go Broncos! Make us Proud!
Touchdown Broncos! For the Crowd!
Stomp Your Feet! Rattle the Stands!
We cheer for you. Your biggest Fans!
…..BEE!

Pop Warner is over for my cheerleader, which means it’s competition season. On January 20th we’ll be headed ( again ) to Last Vegas for the 2024 JAMZ Nationals. It will be our third such trip. Our first competition was met with the untimely demise of the family van. The second resulted in a new pet. Who knows what will happen this time. Hopefully? Just a trophy. First place would be nice.

Take care. Stay healthy. Live life.

Photos tell a story.

But when I’m old and gray.

The only photos I’ll care about.

Are of my family in disarray.

Staged photos may seem more appealing.

But really they’re really just a lie.

Because the most memorable family photos.

Are the ones that go awry.

Bunny ears.

Funny sneers.

Jabs. Slaps.

Piggybacks.

Their personalities all come out.

My family’s perfectly imperfect.

But still, I have to shout.

“Hold still, damnit!”

Click.

Cheer Dad

Cheer Dad
I’ve been to more football games since my daughter, Kaylee, joined Pop Warner Cheer than I have in my whole life. The competitions? They’re just the icing on the cake.

I come to the games.

But root for my girl.

As she rallies the crowd.

With a kick and a twirl.

I know all of her cheers.

And a few of her moves.

But whenever I show her.

She looks terrified. Bemused.

On weekends without games.

She enters competitions.

Frilly tents dot the landscape.

A bedazzled exposition.

I look on in amusement.

Bewildered at the display.

Should I offer to help?

Or stay the heck out of the way.

At home there are footprints.

On the walls, windows, and ceilings.

The result of handstands and roundoffs.

And endless cartwheeling.

I’m amazed at her determination.

Her skill and her grace.

I look forward to seeing her.

Cheering.

With a smile on her face.

Viva Las Vegas

Las Vegas Cheer Competition Jam Rancho Bernardo Broncos Dead Van Chrysler Town and Country
My family and I may have lost a minivan, but we gained an adventure.

A van full of seven.
A cheerleader competition.
Through the desert to Vegas, let’s go!

With twenty miles left.
The van ran out of breath.
Worried, we grumbled, oh, no!

We rolled into a gas station.
And shouted exasperations.
As the van barfed up it’s engine and died.

And then a stretch limousine.
Rolled onto the scene.
And offered us all a ride.

We couldn’t believe our good luck.
The kids were awestruck.
We raced to meet the rest of the team.

Guess what? They won second!
And it was worth it I reckon.
I guess things are not always bad as they seem.

I Broke My Butt

kids books i broke my butt dawn mcmillan elementary school teacher tailbone cousin family dogs lover comic
My cousin, Angela, badly hurt her rear and I thought she could use some cheering up so I plagiarized one of her students’ favorite books. My apologies to the REAL author of “I Broke My Butt”, Dawn McMillan as I’m probably breaking some copyright and artistic integrity laws. The original can be found here on Amazon. For more on my rendition go here.

She slipped.

She fell.

She broke her rear.

My cousin.

My La La.

Who I hold so dear.

Her spirit.

Is strong.

She will recover.

This comic.

I drew.

Because I love her.

Take care. Stay healthy. Live life.

So, I went mountain biking …

Bike Crash Over The Hill Mountain Biking Bicycling Angelus Oaks Big Bear Mountain MTB Poetry Comic
…and I pretty much proved to myself that I probably shouldn’t go mountain biking anymore. I used to go a lot when I was younger. Key word : younger. This time I was a flailing 40-something precariously walking the line between between mortal injury and questionable control.

Game Day

Fantasy Football Sunday Superbowl Game Day Family Friends Kids Poetry Comic
I’m not a fan of football. In fact, I drew this comic on the couch at a friend’s house during a Fantasy Football party. It was hard to draw, too, with all of the boisterous cheering and jostling. What I DO appreciate, however, is the chance to hang out with some good friends. So, I may not be a fan – but I love the game.
